The Counseling Department of River City Christian School strives to meet the needs of students who have difficulty coping with academics or getting along with others. Through the Counseling Program, we seek to help students address school, social and behavioral issues, as well as issues of low self-worth. This program endeavors to provide a safe environment in which a student's emotional issues can be addressed, as well as to help students learn to make wise decisions, to accept responsibility and to apply Scriptural principles from God's Word. All counseling services are provided by a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
Play Therapy Works!
Play therapy is a form of therapeutic service that allows children to communicate their feelings and emotions through their natural medium of communication, which is play. Play is a natural and spontaneous part of children's lives. Play is fun, creative and critical to healthy development. During play, children interact with toys and other people as they enter new experiences and rehearse new skills. As such, the playroom allows children to safely address and resolve their problems. Children communicate their difficulties more effectively through play than they can through language.
Research has revealed that children benefit from play therapy, including children experiencing:
- Social Maladjustment
- Socially Withdrawn
- Conduct Disorder/ Aggression / Oppositional
- Behavioral Problems
- Anxiety / Fear
- Autism
- Low Self-Esteem
- Intellectually / Mentally Challenged
- Reading Difficulties Physical or Learning Disabilities
- Speech / Language Problems
- Sexual Abuse
- Domestic Violence
- Depression
- Post-Traumatic Stress
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Life Adjustment (Divorce, death, chronic illness, etc.)
Play therapy can help children to:
- Accept responsibility for their behavior
- Develop new and creative problem solving skills
- Learn to respect and accept themselves, as well as others
- Learn to express feelings and emotions appropriately
- Develop new social skills
Play Therapy is also available on campus.
